About Second Helping Kitchen

Easy, tested recipes for real weeknights — written to be cooked from, not scrolled past.

What this site is

Second Helping Kitchen publishes original home-cooking recipes built around a simple premise: you came here to cook something tonight, so the ingredients and the method should be the first things you see. No life story before the recipe card, no fifteen paragraphs of preamble, no padding written for a search engine.

Everything is organised by how people actually decide what to make — by meal, by method, or by the appliance they want to use. Every recipe lists real timings, real yields, and nutrition figures calculated from the ingredient list rather than guessed at.

How recipes are tested

“Tested in a real kitchen” is a specific claim, so here is what it means. Nothing is published from theory alone. A recipe reaches the site only after it has been cooked with ordinary equipment in a domestic kitchen — no commercial ranges, no blast chillers, no ingredients you would need a specialist supplier for.

  • Cooked before it's written. Timings, temperatures and yields come from the actual cook, not from a rounded estimate.
  • Written for a home kitchen. Standard oven, standard hob, ordinary pans. Where an appliance genuinely matters — air fryer basket size, slow cooker capacity — the recipe says so.
  • Failure points called out. If a step is where things usually go wrong, the recipe says what to look for rather than just how long to wait.
  • Reviewed before it goes live. Every draft is read end to end and approved by a person before it is published. Nothing reaches the site automatically.

Editorial standards

  • Original writing only. Recipes and the text around them are written here. We research a dish widely — that is how anyone learns to cook — but we do not copy or reword another site's method, headnote or photographs.
  • Our own photography. Every image on the site is produced for that specific recipe. We never use another publisher's photo, and we never build an image from one.
  • Corrections are welcome. If a recipe doesn't work, that is useful information. Tell us what happened and we will retest and fix the page — corrections are made to the recipe itself, not buried in a comment.
  • No paid placements. Nothing on this site is included because someone paid for it to be. If that ever changes, it will be disclosed on the page it affects and on the disclosure page.

About the nutrition figures

Nutrition information is calculated from the listed ingredients and divided by the stated number of servings. It is an estimate offered for convenience: brands vary, produce varies, and how much sauce ends up on your plate varies. Treat the numbers as a guide rather than a medical figure, and check the ingredients yourself if you are cooking around an allergy or a specific dietary requirement.

Why there’s no byline

Recipes here are published under the Second Helping Kitchen name rather than an individual's. The standards above apply to every post regardless of who worked on it, and we would rather be held to a consistent process than to a personality. Every recipe is still read and approved by a person before publication.
